A Chromatic Scale — Notes and Intervals

The A Chromatic scale is the collection of all twelve notes available in Western music. On Piano, the notes are A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, G#. It offers the maximum possible density and is used for total melodic flexibility, fluid shifting between keys, and adding intense color to simpler melodies. Commonly used in Classical, Jazz, Metal, Experimental. Notable players include Franz Liszt, Charlie Parker, Yngwie Malmsteen. Context-dependent — works as a passing device over any harmony. Not a 'soloing' scale but a coloring tool. Great for chromatic approach notes.

Notes: A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, G#

How to Play A Chromatic on Piano

On piano, the A Chromatic scale uses 5 black keys. With several black keys involved, let the thumb naturally fall on white keys where possible. Practice hands separately at first, paying attention to smooth thumb-under transitions.

The A Chromatic scale contains both sharps and flats (3 sharps, 2 flats), which is common in altered and exotic scales. This scale does not follow a traditional major or minor key signature, so reading from sheet music may require accidentals.

Practice Routine

Set a metronome to 80 BPM and play the A Chromatic scale in groups of four notes, shifting the starting note each repetition. This builds muscle memory across the entire scale range. After a week, try improvising short 4-bar phrases using only these notes.

Experiment with simple two-chord vamps rooted on A to let the characteristic intervals of the Chromatic scale come through clearly.

Piano Tips

At the piano, try voicing the A Chromatic scale in the left hand as blocked intervals (thirds or sixths) while the right hand plays the melody. This develops your harmonic ear and comping skills simultaneously.

The A Chromatic scale contains 12 notes (A, Bb, B, C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, G#). Use the interactive piano diagram above to explore this scale on Piano.
